MUSICAL “The Tale of Chun Hyang”. The Remake

Home > Repertoire > MUSICAL “The Tale of Chun Hyang”. The Remake

A story of broken destinies based on the legend of Chun Hyang… about all-devouring love… about unfulfilled dreams… about unbroken loyalty…

Chun Hyang, the daughter of  Wolme, the former local Kisyan*, brought up in the best traditions of the nobility, meets Ben Hak To and  Yi Mon Nyon, the son of Sato**. Mon Nyon is in love and secretly woos Chun Hyang, who had mutual feelings for him. Rejected Ben Hak To suffers from unrequited love. Mon Nyon’s father is promoted and is sent to the capital. Mon Nyon is forced to leave with his parents. A new ruler(sato) has been appointed, who turns out to be Ben Hak To. He summons Chun Hyang to him and persuades her to become his concubine, but Chun Hyang remains loyal to Mong Nyong. Sato, in anger, sends her to prison, hoping that she will not endure the torment and will agree to marry him …

This is the traditional narrative of the folk legend. But the theater’s production team offers the viewer a new vision of the classic production: all the action is accompanied by a “live” music, there is an alternative ending, as well as a large number of non-standard stage solutions. All the creative forces of the theater are involved in the total rethinking of the classical work, and that is why the performance is released in the format of a musical performance.
